What is Jin Shin Jyutsu?

“Jyutsu” means art. The Art of Jin Shin is an ancient Japanese healing practice often translated as “the Art of Living,” “the Art of Happiness,” or “the Art of Getting to Know (Help) Myself.”

Similar to acupressure, Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ) uses gentle touch on specific areas of the body to encourage the free flow of life energy. It helps relax the body and mind, reduce stress, relieve pain, and support the body’s natural ability to heal. JSJ is a holistic practice that balances all aspects of our Being—body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

Jin Shin Jyutsu can also be used alongside conventional medicine as a supportive, complementary therapy, helping manage stress, illness, and the side effects of treatment.

What is a session like?

Sessions last about an hour. The client, fully clothed, lies face-up on a massage table while the practitioner “listens” to the energetic pulses in the wrists. This helps the practitioner understand what needs harmonizing.

They then gently place their hands on specific areas of the body called Safety Energy Locks (SEL’s)—moving one or both hands to different locations along the energy pathway. This is called a “flow.”

There may be several rounds of pulse listening and flows during a session. Most clients feel deeply relaxed—many even fall asleep!

Jin Shin Self-Help

Jin Shin Jyutsu emphasizes the importance of learning and practicing self-help. Clients are often given simple “homework” to use between sessions—like holding a specific finger or resting a hand on a particular part of the body. These gentle techniques help keep energy flowing and support continued healing.

Self-help classes are also available! Learning and using these tools empowers us to actively care for our own health, balance, and vitality.
