What's with the Attitude?! — 4-Part Series

What exactly ARE attitudes? Are they Feelings? Emotions? If these attitudes are the root of all disharmony in the body, let's make sure we understand what the term ATTITUDE actually means.

First of all, feelings and attitudes are NOT the same thing.

One of my instructors, Wayne Hackett, succinctly explains the difference between Feelings and Attitudes. He says that Feelings are SENSATIONS. They are not "good," not "bad." They just are what they are. ATTITUDES are the judgements we make about the sensations. We have gone beyond simply feeling and now our mind is involved.

Feelings and Emotions are similar in that they are both meant to move through us ( E-motion = energy in motion!)

Attitudes, on the other hand, develop when emotions get "stuck" within us.

There is nothing inherently wrong with ANY emotion or feeling. They all serve a purpose. Feelings are signals that provide crucial information to motivate actions, communicate needs to ourselves and others, and guide behaviors. As long as we are alive, we will feel every emotion at one time or another, and undoubtedly feel them often! But our feelings are supposed to MOVE through us! When feelings get stuck, they can become attitudes...how we position ourselves in life (you could say, our "disposition" or dis-position).  It's important for us to allow emotions, feelings and moods to move through us. This is exactly what holding our fingers does for us- it keeps us from getting stuck in  attitude.
